Well, darlings, the Oscars are right around the corner (when the hell are ALL the awards shows done, for goodness gravy?). So this is Rox's Picks of who should and who will take home a little guy on Sunday (and no I'm not talking about Prince's date). Who should win: DREAMGIRLS, DAMMIT! I digress ... let's do the acting categories first, shall we?
Actor in a Leading Role -- should win is Ryan Gosling but no one saw "Half Nelson" (but it's an honor to be nominated, right? Only losers believe that) ... will win is Peter O'Toole because he's old and he's never actually won an Oscar. Forest Whitaker has lots of buzz but people don't think he has enough screen time to be a "leading actor" (but did you see "The Last King of Scotland"? Wow, it was really uplifting...um, not at all).
Actress in a Leading Role: Mirren, Helen Mirren. Are there any questions?
Actor in a Supporting Role: Should win is a tie between Alan Arkin ("Little Miss Sunshine") and Jackie Earl Haley ("Little Children") for doing such heartbreaking, nuanced performances but unfortunately there's this "little" thing called "Dreamgirls Guilt" and Eddie Murphy will walk away with the prize.
Actress in a Supporting Role: Should win is Adriana Barraza from "Babel" with a performance that is so unbelievably real and physically demanding that she was the heart and heartbreak of a very depressing movie; Will win is a real toss-up as Jennifer Hudson has won every prize in the Cracker Jack box so far but many think she's still "just a singer" -- but if Catherine Zeta Jones can get it for "Chicago" then surely Hudson's powerhouse performance can guarantee a win!
Best Director should/will win is Mr. Scorcese for "The Departed" on shear body of work if anything else.
Best Picture is probably the hardest one -- "The Departed" was the biggest box office taker while no one saw "Letters from Iowa Jima" (it was all in Japanese, wasn't it? Oh, wait, none of us saw it...). "Little Miss Sunshine" is the little movie that keeps coulding but does it have what it takes, a la "Crash," to win an Oscar? And it didn't get a Best Director nod which could hurt its chances. So, should win is "The Departed" but if there is an upset it could be that little ray of "Sunshine." The Oscars are Sunday, February 25, and more info can be found at
www.oscar.com. Oh, and Rox can't wait to see Ellen strut her hilarious stuff!

As much as I lurved Dreamgirls and JHud, I agree that Adriana should win Best Sup. Actress. But I am so glad we get to see JHud perform on the show (although it's a lame song).
And don't get me started about E! having JHol (Jennifer Holliday) performing "And I'm Telling You..." on the Oscar Red Carpet...tasteless.
Love the blog,
