Hello, lovers. Well, Rox has been taking several bites out of the Big Apple all week and decided to have some Rox-time and go see the new hit musical "Legally Blonde: The Musical" which of course is the musical based on the hilarious movie starring Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon. You forget the bend and snap, you say? Well...here's your brief:
Sorority star Elle Woods doesn't take "no" for an answer. So when her boyfriend dumps her for someone “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.
Now, the cast is extremely talented, let me start there. The songs and lyrics, however, should get 20 to life for being as cliche (and not in a good way) and cheesy as they come. Not as horrible as "Saturday Night Fever: The Musical" or "Footloose: The Musical" but it does contain several moving violations. The saving grace is sassy lead Laura Bell Bundy who Rox first saw as Amber Von Tussle in "Hairspray: The Musical (not the movie based on the musical based on the movie)." Rox also saw Bundy as "Glinda" in Broadway's "Wicked" as she played stand-by for Ms. Kristen Chenoweth. This hottie has more talent in her size 2 bod then most musicals have in an entire cast. She can sing, act and dance and makes this cream-cheese role her own. The supporting cast is terrific but the sets, well, totally suck. If you're looking for mindless entertainment with very few hummable songs but some outstanding performances than you definitely will prefer Blonde. TTGP gives "Legally Blonde: The Musical" three diet pops out of a six-pack. But please note, my darlings, that Megan Mullally of "Will & Grace" fame is starring in the new Mel Brooks movie-into-a-musical "Young Frankenstein" which goes into Broadway previews mid-October. Now THAT should be a monster of a hit!!
