And We're Back!!

Ok -- I just realized that I've had two sports references in about two weeks so clearly I'm exhausted and mentally tapped. Thus, I must get renergized so I will tell you about my amazing trip to BROADWAY last night!!! Now, first of all, I wasn't sure what I wanted to see...could I really see Wicked for a 12th time, darlings? (Of course I tried but it was all sold out.) Story still applies, so then I saw what can make grown boy-lovin' men cry...1) a revival of "Gypsy" and 2) starring Patti LuPone! The mothership was calling, darlings, the mothership was calling! So, for those of you who aren't familiar with "Gypsy" here's a quickie:

A consummate show-biz musical suggested by the memoirs of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. She was once just plain Louise, the awkward daughter of an unstoppably ambitious stage mother. When her pretty sister runs away from the family's minor vaudeville act, Louise tries to fulfill her mother's dreams. But it's not until trouping with Mama dwindles to appearing in burlesque, that Louise finally finds pleasure in the spotlight. The vibrant score includes 'Some People,' 'Let Me Entertain You,' 'Together,' 'Everything's Coming Up Roses.' Got it?

So, the last time I saw this on Broadway was the bo-ring version with Bo-ring Bernadette Peters. Yawn. However, I had been hearing some amazing things about Ms. LuPone (who won a Tony when she starred in the opening of "Evita") and who later went on to star in that TV show with Corky. I digress -- let me just tell you that this woman was one of the most amazing performances I've seen besides Christine Ebersole in "Gray Gardens" (and SHE won the Tony for that performance). So, LuPone is a soft-shoe-in for a nomination and a win. You know it's amazing stuff when the audience gives a performer a standing ovation DURING THE SHOW!! Yes, lovers, it's THAT good. And even more impressive is the supporting cast who held their own with grace, depth and fantastic character developments. So, if you're in NYC any time soon...run, nay, sprint (another sports reference) to see this Gypsy. TTGP gives "Gypsy" five sodas out of a six pack and Ms. LuPone gets a six-pack and a Big O outta Rox.
