Turn Off Your Lights March 28th, Baby!

WORLD WILDLIFE FUND (WWF), CITY OF LOS ANGELES, AND AEG/L.A. LIVE TEAM UP FOR EARTH HOUR– “FIRST GLOBAL VOTE FOR THE PLANET,” ON SATURDAY, MARCH 28 AT 8:30 PM

One Hour - Earth Hour. Turn Out. Take Action. Vote Earth.

LOS ANGELES (February 27, 2009) –During a joint press conference this morning downtown at L.A. Live, World Wildlife Fund climate expert Dr. Richard Moss, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Timothy J. Leiweke, president & CEO of AEG, announced they will jointly host a series of events designed to encourage Los Angeles residents to turn out their lights on March 28th starting at 8:30 pm in celebration of WWF’s Earth Hour 2009.

Earth Hour is a global event that unites cities, businesses, schools, organizations and individuals by asking them to turn out the lights for one hour in a unified call for action on climate change. Encouraging people worldwide to become active participants in solving the urgent climate changing issues, Earth Hour L.A. will be the culmination of WWF’s global campaign that will include nearly 700 cities in 78 countries.

During Earth Hour L.A., city and community leaders, local residents and business owners will come together to turn out lights in homes, iconic buildings, landmarks, and corporate office complexes, creating a citywide visual that reflects the region’s commitment to protect the environment.

"When a city as bright with stars as Los Angeles goes dark for Earth Hour, it sends a powerful message to Washington and the world to take action on climate change," said Dr. Richard Moss, vice president for WWF’s climate change program. "Californians know all too well the threats posed by climate change to water resources and other quality of life issues so important to its economic future. By turning out the lights for Earth Hour, the citizens of Los Angeles will be joining with tens of millions of people around the world in casting a vote via their light-switch to protect the planet for the benefit of future generations.”

Leading up to Earth Hour L.A., educational, cultural and community events will be held citywide to engage residents in becoming active participants in solving global climate problems. Then on Saturday, March 28, citizens from across the L.A. metropolitan area will converge at the newest entertainment icon at L.A. Live for a global media event that is sure to have other cities green with envy.

"Los Angeles is proud to be a flagship city for Earth Hour 2009,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “Through our work in greening our ports, increasing our use of renewable power and creating sustainable communities, Los Angeles is at the leading edge in

addressing the challenges of climate change at a local level. Angelinos should use this opportunity to take account of how they can be part of the solution to the global problem of climate change."

“Earth Hour is an opportunity to come together and discuss the power each one of us has to make a difference, and there isn't a better icon in Los Angeles to host this conversation than L.A. LIVE,” said Timothy J. Leiweke, president & CEO, AEG. “At AEG we know that a small step can make a big impact. For us each bottle recycled, each waterless urinal upgraded and each solar panel installed brings us all one step closer to the sustainable future we envision for our children. By taking a lead on setting a sustainability standard for live entertainment we hope to inspire other members of the community to join us, one step at a time.”

Programs that Citizens Can Participate in for WWF's "Earth Hour Los Angeles" Include:
• Paradise at Night – People all over Los Angeles will stop their busy lives for one hour to get together with their kids, friends (or their entire block!) to turn off the lights and look at the stars. Residents are encouraged to get out their telescopes, download a map of the constellations and find the Big Dipper and Orion!

• Dine By Candlelight – restaurants, bars and hotels across L.A. will be dimming the lights and serving dinner and drinks by candlelight on Earth Hour night. Residents can participate in Earth Hour while also supporting their favorite businesses by having a romantic dinner for two or enjoying Eco-tinis with a group of friends.

• Dark Performances – Performance venues around Los Angeles will power down their exterior lighting, music performances will go acoustic and improv theaters will perform in the dark.

• L.A. Schools ‘Green’ Contests – Local high school students will compete to make their schools and communities greener. The contests will be designed to develop curriculum about sustainability education. Details will be announced as part of the Los Angeles Earth Hour event.

• Make a One-Minute Movie – 60oneminutes.org is taking submissions for one-minute movies that support Earth Hour with the theme, Take Back Your Power. A selection of submissions will be broadcast on Current TV starting on Earth Hour through to Earth Day as a fun, interactive way of continuing the conversation past 9:31 p.m. on March 28.
