Pop Fizzle of the Week: Please let me start by saying that Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" is one of my top-5 favorite albums of all time. Do you understand that? Good. Now, Ms. Lilith Fair has a new CD out which is being touted as a "holiday" CD titled "Wintersong." I would call it "Winterwrong," my sweets. I was so enthusiastic when I heard the first single was going to be a McLachlan take on Joni Mitchell's "River" which happens to be one of my all-time faves as well. So when I downloaded "Winterwrong" on iTunes I couldn't wait to hear it. I burned a legal copy for my own personal use and listened to it on my way to work. I immediately went to track 3 ("River") which I now refer to as "Wither" -- as in "wither or not this song should have been released at all is the question of the day!" It's soooo boring. It's so boring that I'm bored even writing about it. And so I jumped back to Track 1 ("Happy Xmas/War is Over") with a newly opened mind. Even a bad holiday CD usually has 2-3 tracks on it that can make me dream of sugar plum fairies dancing in my head but "Winterwrong" now holds the dubious distinction of being the worst holiday CD Rox has ever heard. There is no soul, there is no lightness or joy in the song selection, arrangements or the overall vibe. I am so disappointed in this offering...you know there is no holiday soul when you're listening to a CD that's billed as a holiday CD and the only time it really jolts you is when you hear the word "Christmas." This could have been a CD that Sarah released in July because it's so un-holiday-inspired that Jack Frost wouldn't even want to listen to the track called "In A Bleak Mid Winter." I mean, COME ON, "In A Bleak Mid Winter"?? Why not have a track that's called, "Santa is a Sham," or "Oh, Come All Ye Scrooges," or "I'll Be Home for Christmas Unless Something Better Comes Along"? Jeepers, Sarah. I'm going to bust out "Fumbling" just so I feel better about always being by your side all of these years. Now that I think about it, perhaps this should be called "Fumbling to Do A Holiday CD but Bette Midler Kicked My Arse With 'Cool Yule'"! "Wintersong" gets 1.5 pops (out of a six-pack) for being so Ho, Ho, Hum.

That's a bummer. I loved FTE too - but have been disappointed with pretty much everything she's put out since. (She set the bar high!)
Oh well, at least we still have "Possesion" and "Good Enough."
Btw, Aimee Mann did a great cover of "River" for a Starbucks Holiday compilation last year...you should check it out!
Thanks for the heads up about Aimee Mann -- I really dig her, too! Cheers! Rox
