'Pop' Goes to the Movies: So last night some friends of mine and I went to see the Damon, DiCaprio, Nicholson movie "The Departed." I wasn't really sure what to expect although most reviews have been kind to the all-star cast and its bespected director (is bespected a word? It is now...)...anywho, so the premise is this "we're all corrupt and shouldn't trust anyone" more or less. The performances are outstanding with Leo being particularly strong and actually turning into a real man with facial hair and some pecs. Damon is great a la Talented Mr. Ripley, and Nicholson is his usual fantastic (although during some of his monologues he seems to lose his thick Boston accent; we forgive him). Oh, and there's a crazy turn from Markie Mark without his Funky Bunch that is so over the top fab that you hope you can remember some of the things he said so the next time road rage or that annoying commoner consumes you that you actually will be able to talk/rap prose of profanities like the former Calvin Klein underwear man himself. Alec Baldwin is playing someone who is playing someone in a B-corruption movie but he's fun to giggle at so we forgive him too. Now, if you cringe at the sight of blood or the occasional amputated hand, then go see Open Season (you'll catch up on your sleep as it's the most offensive of movies: the boring cartoon pic). I digress, it's a bit violent but if you can handle the Everything's $1 section of Target, then you can handle this. The ending is interesting but not shocking in that I'm-really-dead-people or I-really-have-a-penis way of other "surprise endings." Go see it for the performances and the fantastic West Wing-like dialogue (by the way, President Bartlet also is in this .. if only Kristen Chenowith were in it as a corrupt hooker...). 'Pop' gives it a 4.5-pack (out of a six-pack of diet POP). Tonight we're going into Hollywood to see the play "Seven Redneck Cheerleaders" (I'm already feeling like I'm back home!!). Rox
