Tap Into Your Inner Penguin
Rox just saw "Happy Feet" and there's a reason it's the #1 movie in America -- marketing. It's everywhere ... McDonald's, Blockbuster...ev-er-y-where. So my partner in crime and I took our niece and nephew to see the show. Let me tell you that I was more giddy than the kids from the very start. First of all, it's a story about a little Penguin named "Mumble" who, in a you-must-have-a-personal-theme-song-to-sing-in-order-to-fit-in, sings worse than Roseanne at a baseball game. However, the boy can tap dance ("Happy Feet" -- get it?). But it isn't until he's disgraced in front of the girl penguin he loves (voiced by the always-brilliant Brittany Murphy) that he leaves the gaggle of penguins and finds friends who accept him for him (Land of Misfit Toys, anyone?). Nonetheless, although the story might have been told before, the audience had a blast watching this 'toon musical. And a musical it is ... with a cast of voices that includes Hugh Jackman (doing his best Elvis as "Memphis"), his wife the saucy aussy Nicole Kidman (as breathy "Norma Jean"), their son "Mumble" (voiced by the wide-eyed and wonderful Elijah Wood), "Gloria," Mumble's love interest with the huge, um, pipes (Murphy sings like Christina Aguilera, baby, and she is amazing). The soundtrack boasts interpreted songs such as Prince's "Kiss," Queen's "Somebody to Love," Earth, Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland" and more. And wait until you hear the now-sober-again Robin Williams as he voices numerous, hilarious characters. In the end, your toes will be tapping, you'll be cheering all the characters on and you'll love the messages for the world and your kids to be a little more tolerant and for us all to be more aware of our surroundings. And the animation is absolutely breath-taking. There are some pretty scary parts in it, popsters, so just be prepared if you're with kids or if you're with a bunch of pansies. Pick up the soundtrack that has all of the cast singing the versions from the movie (try to sit still while you're driving with THAT in the CD player). TTGP gives it a 5-pack out of six, as the march of the penguins continues.
