As Roxie types this you can hear the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack
playing in the background ... "we're your dreamgirls, boy, we'll make you happy...we're you're dreamgirls, boy, what the hell do you mean we didn't get a Best Picture Nomination? Oh, hell-to-the NO!" THE MOVIE GET THE MOST NOMINATIONS THAN ANY OTHER MOVIE AND YET GETS SNUBBED FOR PICTURE, DIRECTOR AND SCREENPLAY? There is no justice in this totally unjust world, my friends!!! Rox, who actually is the fifth honorary member of the diva group, is so torn with this year's Oscar nods that I just need to get it all out ... here it goes, on the one hand Rox is thrilled for the folks who Things That Goes Pop picked for Best Newcomers/Ones to Watch: Rox profiled America Ferrera (who since has won the Golden Globe for "Ugly" - and is the cutest darned thing you've ever seen), Abigail Breslin (currently a Supporting Actress Oscar nom for her fantastic, heartbreaking turn as "Olive" in "Little Miss Sunshine"), Jennifer Hudson (also a nom for Best Supporting Actress for her diva-shaking-the-rafters performance as "Effie White" in "Dreamgirls"), oh, and Daniel Craig ('cause he's H-O-T). So, for all of these new faves I am thrilled. Here are others things that are making Rox a little tingly (in a good way): Best Actress race isn't a bunch of 20 year-olds....with the acting prowess of folks such as Meryl, Judi, and Helen, one has hope that the graying of America will also include Hollywood. This makes Ms. Streep the most nominated actor of all time (Ms. Hepburn still holds the record for most actual wins -- 4 Oscars in all). Whatever about Penelope Cruz, but I did like Kate -- and hottie Patrick Wilson (oh my) in "Little Children." However, this is all but decided with Mirren being a huge front-runner. Also, in the Best Supporting Actor category Rox was thrilled to see Jackie Earle Haley as the creepy yet heartbreaking sexual pervert from "Little Children" (you probably recognize him from the first Bad News Bears movie as he was a very popular child actor who fell into oblivion until being cast in this difficult film). Way to go for perseverance!! Now, what is making Rox hot and bothered (and not in a good way), you say? I cannot, canNOT, CANNOT believe "Dreamgirls" was overlooked for Best Picture and Best Director nominations. I could ALMOST understand the Academy not giving them Best Picture because, afterall, there a bunch of insensitive white guys making the decisions -- but to not give Bill Condon a pat on the back for making a musical that truly is a musical -- and pulling out some of the best performances by newcomers and old-timers -- is a travesty. A TRAVESTY, I say! And, oh, please, dear makers of "Babel" (have you seen it?)...this is how I explain what it was like to watch "Babel" --if you're on the edge between deciding if life is good or pure evil and simply need proof either way, watch "Babel" and you will realize how truly, truly sucky life can be...oh, and that Brad can't act). Is my bitterness apparent?! Anywho, the Best Director will go to Scorsese (sympathy and "body of work" vote), Best Actor should go to Forest Whitaker but the 109-year-old Peter O'Toole will finally earn an Oscar after all of these years, Best Actress to Helen Mirren, Best Supporting Actor will go to Alan Arkin ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Best Supporting Actress should be a tie with Hudson and Breslin but Hudson probably will prevail, and Best Picture is a toss-up now (oy). Anywhy, my dearest "Dreamgirls," know you are loved, we want to be you and that the Oscars are One Night Only. Kiss, kiss. Rox
