What kind of world do we live in when a 62-year-old drag queen known as Dolly Parton can outcraft an album then anyone else making records now -- young or old?! Well, Dolly's latest "Backwoods Barbie" is a tremendous achievement, my pop-loving darlings!! As far as the fave five test?? There are more single-worthy songs on this album than Janet and Britney have seen in decades. And who else can remake Fine Young Cannibals' "Drives Me Crazy" and Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears" and make them 1) her own and 2) sound like they definitely need to be on the same album?? Rox's favorites are "Better Get to Livin'," "Made of Stone," "Drives Me Crazy," "Tracks of My Tears," "Shinola," -- and if you want to know the power of this little doll's songwriting, check out "Better Get to Livin'" and especially "Backwoods Barbie" during which she professes "Don't let these false eye lashes lead you to believe I'm as shallow as I look 'cause I run true and deep." Or on "Jesus & Gravity" where she says "something's lifting me up and holding me down...Jesus and gravity" (and don't think the play on words are lost on Rox!)! If you want an elegantly crafted contemporary country album that has blues and honky tonk thrown in then grab Ken and go buy Backwoods Barbie. Dolly, we will always love you!! TTGP gives "Backwoods" a pretty darn tootin' great five pops out of a six pack!
