Hollayuck Girl
Gwen Stefani is fierce. Let's get that straight right now. She's sassy, cool, chic and a helluva song writer, well, hellagood actually. And she's a sweetheart: she met my nieces at the GRAMMYs a couple of years ago and they were smitten with each other. Gwen even loved a beret one of the girls was wearing and told her how much she dug the lid, so Rox immediately became the coolest family member around! All of that being said, Gwenie Gwen's "Rich Girl" and "Hollaback Girl" were two of the most refreshing singles to come out from anyone, anywhere in a very long time. I mean, WHO SAMPLES "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF"? Brilliant. And when I heard she was releasing a new single I was suprised that she had time to be in the studio since the birth of her child -- oh, and she has a hot husband. Nonetheless I was doing some digging to find out where she recorded new material and then lo-and-behold (who says that??)...lo-and-behold I hear Gwen in an interview during the MTV Europe Awards two weeks ago actually say that her "new" stuff is really leftover tracks from Love.Angel.Music.Baby. Sweetie, first of all, don't admit something like that. Secondly, don't admit something like that. Well, sometimes you can get that rare b-side track that probably is better than anything that made the original cut. However, Gwen's new single "Wind It Up" is not that rare. As a matter of fact, it's the most cookie cutter song Ms. Stefani has ever done. It's Hollaback and Rich Girl wrapped into one but this time her producers sample "Lonely Goatherd" from the "Sound of Music." Oh, and there's yodelling (I can't make it up). What's next? "Memory" from Cats? "All I Ask of You" from Phantom? Or any dismal song from the new "Tarzan" musical on Broadway (Disney, stop the madness and tell the T man to swing on home). It's such a disappointing single from an artist that has surprised a lot of folks with her pop prowess (and one of my favorite producers the Neptunes, what is up, boys??). Instead of L.A.M.B. for her next album it should be L.A.M.E. 'Pop' gives "Wind it Up" 2 diet pops out of a six pack. Here's to counting on the second single from her upcoming album "Sweet Escape" to get her back on Rox's good side! Cheers.
