"Georgia" On My Mind

So Rox went to see the new Jane Fonda, Lindsay Lohan and Felicity Huffman chick-flick "Georgia Rule" last night. If you're looking for a "Monster in Law" feel-good comedy flick you will be sadly disappointed. If you also are looking for good writing then you also will be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a movie that mostly gets family dynamics right -- especially in a household where addiction and denial go together like pb&j -- oh, and if you want to see some real acting (even Lohan, Popsters) then I would say check the flick out. You can never go wrong with Fonda who plays the healing enabler with such a fire inside that you can always see the wheels turning in her "Georgia." And if you ever doubted that Huffman is the real deal (which you shouldn't because she runs circles around everyone -- including Marcia Cross) then you will be amazed at her performance here. I found myself craving more screen time with Fonda and Huffman, and I even almost forgot what a pop celebrity Lohan has become as I watched her go from seductress to child in the bat of a well-applied false eyelash. Oh, the premise of the movie ... long story short: Fonda is the emotionally inaccessible mom of alcohol-challenged Huffman while Lohan is the out-of-control foozie, yet brilliant daughter. Huffman drops the kid off with grandmama and all hell breaks loose. At first you think all of the boundaries Georgia puts on her life and those around her are simply based on a prudish, tight-arse old lady. We find out that the "Georgia Rules" are put in place to add an inkling of consistency in an anything-but-consistent household. Now, there are some of the cheesiest lines you've ever heard -- except for in Grease 2 -- which is off-putting to say the least. However, the story unfolds with the drama of your own dysfunctional family -- along with some very heavy subject matter. If you love Fonda and Huffman -- go see this movie now. If you're only curious then it can wait for DVD night. TTGP givea Fonda and Huffman a 5.5-pack out of six diet sodas. Lohan gets a 4-pack out of six for even trying to be an actress again and almost overcoming her celebrity for 120 minutes; and "Georgia Rule" writers get a 2-pack. Do the math, Popsters.
